Preventive Treatment for Lyme Disease

Although not routinely recommended, antibiotic treatment following a tick bite may be beneficial for some people living in areas where Lyme disease is common. Healthcare providers must decide whether the advantages of prescribing antibiotics after a tick bite outweigh the disadvantages. A healthcare provider will take several factors into consideration for this preventive treatment of Lyme disease. You may be asked the following questions:

  • When you acquired the tick bite, were you in an area where Lyme disease is common?
  • Was the tick attached for at least one day?
  • Has it been less than three days since you removed the tick or since it fell off of you?
